TLI Literacy Program

TLI’s literacy assessments span grades 1-11 in writing and grades 2-11 in reading.  All reading assessments contain eight multiple-choice questions based on the selected reading passage and an open-response item.  Each writing assessment includes no more than 12 multiple-choice items oriented to grammar improvement.  Writing assessments for grades 1-5 also include a writing prompt, and grades 6-11 have the option of utilizing a performance task.  TLI provides up to four reading and four writing assessments per grade per academic year.

TLI currently supports two models in literacy.  The first model focuses on the Common Core State Standards only in grades 1 and 2 while continuing to use your state literacy frameworks and TLI’s Core 14 skills in grades 3-11.  In the second model, districts choose to implement the Common Core State Standards across all grade levels.  Beginning in the 2012 school year, all students in grades 1-8 will be assessed using the Common Core State Standards.

All reading passages, reading items, and writing items are approved by TLI curriculum specialists before assessments are administered.  TLI does not use released items from state assessments or any other previously published source, since doing so would severely impact the reliability and validity of the assessment system.
